Who am (A)I?
What defines us as makers in the digital age of AI?
Which step, which process, or which form of creation makes us unique and different?
Virtually everything we make nowadays can be replicated down to the pixel by AI. So what still makes us unique? Will authentic craftsmanship continue to exist?
Our thoughts, feelings, experiences, and creations have been digitized for years. With the advent of AI, these are being fed—often without explicit permission—to systems that subsequently generate new creations and distribute them to billions of people. Are we still the makers, or will AI become the new maker of the future?
Will we remain makers, become semi-makers, or will making as we know it cease to exist completely?
I have always been a maker. But since the rise of AI, I no longer know exactly what a maker is. I don't even know anymore if I am still a maker myself. Does it still make sense to create something if everything I can make can be generated by a computer in a few minutes? Why do we create things at all? What purpose does it still serve? Every day, technology emerges that automates human labor. Ironically, it seems that authentic makers and artists are the first to be replaced.
You can choose to bury your head in the sand and wait it out. Or you can delve into what this means for you as a maker. I have tried both. Both paths brought mainly fear. The use of AI even created distance between me and my own work. When I make something with AI, it doesn't feel like my craftsmanship. I am not proud of it.
That is why I went looking for other makers — looking for something to hold onto.
- What do they experience?
- Is their world of experience also being infiltrated by AI?
- Do they know how to resist it?
- Or are there makers who have fully embraced AI and see their craftsmanship go hand in hand with this technology?
This documentary is a quest to discover what it means to be a maker in an era where creation is no longer exclusively human.
